What is Tennis Elbow?

Spring and summer are approaching, and it’s the time of year when people start to ask about the injuries they get because they began to increase their activity level after their winter hibernation.

An injury I am asked about is Tennis Elbow. It seems that every year someone I know who hasn’t done any physical activity for a while decides to go nuts on a court of some kind, tennis, basketball, small claims or supreme (whatever) and ends up hurting a part of their body.

Today I will talk about tennis elbow, but one day I will write about the friend who got hurt in small claims court.

Tennis elbow is so named because it can develop from playing tennis too much. It may also originate from not paying attention to your body, improper technique, not enough rest or even trauma to the area.

Tennis elbow is not to be confused with Dennis’ elbow, which my cousin Dennis would use to torment people.

While Tennis elbow is a pain in the outside of your elbow because the tendons have been overworked for too long and now they are inflamed.

Dennis’ elbow is when my idiot cousin Dennis jumps off a chair and elbows you in the head.

By the way, inflammation is when the area is red hot and swollen, and it’s the body’s way to tell you to back off and slow down. Your body is smart enough to tell you when to stop; it’s too bad most of us are too dumb to listen.

Tennis Elbow Now What?

So you overdid it somehow, and you have pain in the area that some people are calling tennis elbow. Worst of all, you don’t play tennis. So how does that happen lousy luck, not really?

Tennis elbow can happen a lot of ways: our initial assessment at Focus Physiotherapy will determine why you are presenting with tennis elbow and the best steps forward.

Yet, the first thing most people will do is look up the treatment and stretches on the internet and try to treat themselves. Those people are what I lovingly refer to as “soft in the head”; they eventually arrive at the clinic full of misinformation and wonder why they haven’t improved with all the stuff they have been doing and reading to treat themselves. Please save us both the time and aggravation and book an appointment at Focus Physiotherapy ASAP.

If you could do the job of a Registered Physiotherapist, you wouldn’t be reading this.

If you want to address an injury take it from me that while reading about things on the internet is interesting, it doesn’t qualify you to develop a treatment regimen that addresses the issue and resolves the problem.

A physiotherapist at Focus Physiotherapy can assess the injury, make a diagnosis and develop a treatment that recognizes the potential factors that have contributed to the injury presentation and teach you what you need to do to stop it from coming back.

The internet can give you general information, but your evaluation and treatment at Focus Physiotherapy do so much more. Not only should we be able to get you better, but our goal is to teach you what caused the problem and what to do to prevent the problem from recurring.

It won’t go away overnight, just like it won’t go away on its own. If you’re reading this, don’t wait to call us and book an appointment. If you’ve messed up, it can take 8-12 weeks to get better 100% without any residual dysfunctions, most of the time it takes less.

Tennis elbow is not complicated because physiotherapists make diagnosis and treatment look easy, your tendon gets inflamed from overuse, and we treat you and teach you stuff to get you better.

As experienced professionals, we make recovery look boring, no magic just evidence-based intervention in accordance with best practice guidelines. So if you have Tennis Elbow come to Focus Physiotherapy to get better and stay off Dr. Google or WebMD.
