What is a Concussion?

A Concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs after an impact to your head that causes your head and brain to shake quickly, back and forth. This sudden movement can create chemical changes in the brain and damage brain cells, changing how your brain normally functions.

While concussions are considered mild brain injuries, it’s essential to understand they are still serious. Traumatic brain injuries of this degree can cause long-term consequences if left untreated.

Causes of Concussions

Concussions can be caused by direct trauma to the head, such as falling, getting hit or being in an accident. As the brain is made of soft tissue cushion by spinal fluid, a blow or bumps to your head can jolt the brain. As a result, your brain doesn’t function as it should.

Possible causes and events that may increase your risk for concussion include:

  • Falls, particularly in children and older adults
  • Contact sports
  • Lack of proper safety gear or supervision for contact sports
  • Car, motorcycle, bicycle and other accidents that cause a blow to the head
  • An earlier concussion

Anyone from infants to the elderly can get a concussion, although people younger than 24 and older than 75 are at the most significant risk. However, most cases are the consequence of sports injuries or motor vehicle accidents.

What are the Symptoms of Concussion?

The symptoms of Concussion can present differently in children, teens and the elderly.

Concussion symptoms in children include, but are not limited to, difficulty with thinking skills, dizziness, fatigue and headache are common. It is best not to return to play until symptoms improve. Some children who return to school after a concussion may require classroom adjustments include a lighter course load and shortened school day.

Some concussion symptoms in teenagers include, but are not limited to, trouble focusing, learning or memory problems, sleep problems and feeling sad, easily upset or angered. Teens recovering from a concussion should cut down on screen time, do not drive, and avoid sports.

Common concussion symptoms for elderly individuals include memory problems, balance problems, sensitivity to noise and light, and sleep issues. Some symptoms are common problems considered in “normal ageing,” therefore it is important to monitor patients closely.

The symptoms of a concussion may not start immediately after injury and can start days or weeks later. Some symptoms last seconds, while others may anger for prolonged periods. You should continue to check for signs of concussion right after the injury and a few days after the injury.

Some of the most common concussion symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • Confusion
  • Headache
  • Vision disturbances (double or blurry vision)
  • Dizziness or imbalance
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Memory loss
  • Slurred speech
  • Irritability or other behavioural changes
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sensitivity to light and/or noise
  • Loss of smell or taste

Concussion Diagnosis

To diagnose a concussion, your health care provider will do a physical exam and ask about your injury. There are three types of concussions.

Grade 1 Concussion – Mild Concussion

This form of injury is more common in minor accidents and sports injuries. Symptoms include but are not limited to headaches, dizziness and memory loss.

Grade 2 Concussion – Moderate Concussion

This is a higher form of injury with a longer duration. Many people suffering from a Grade 2 concussion experience temporary loss of consciousness lasting between a few seconds to several minutes.

Added symptoms include but are not limited to dizziness, confusion and ringing in the ears.

Grade 3 Concussion – Severe Concussion

This form of injury is considered the most severe. They carry the highest risk for long-term or even permanent symptoms. Recovery time is longer, with concussion treatment required for up to two weeks or more.

The symptoms of a Grade 3 concussion are similar to grade 1 and 2, but may also experience speech difficulty, amnesia for 24 hours and vomiting. These symptoms can last for weeks before they begin to subside. However, with a Grade 3 concussion, you are at risk of permanent brain damage.

Treatment at Focus Physiotherapy’s Concussion Clinic Coleraine

Sports-related mTBI or concussions typically have a high rate of recovery when adequately managed. However, mild traumatic brain injuries following motor vehicle collisions are more likely to have symptoms that persist beyond six months and may require more prolonged monitoring. Timely and appropriate concussion treatment in such circumstances is necessary to reduce prolonged periods of debilitation.

Our team of Registered Physiotherapists near Coleraine will often diagnose your mTBI or concussion through careful testing and a detailed history taking of how the injury occurred and your physical presentation. Scans such as x-Rays or MRI’s will often not show an abnormality following a concussion so it’s important to be assessed by a registered physiotherapist. Registered Physiotherapists have the necessary education to diagnose mTBI or concussions following their years of study.
