What Causes Sciatic Nerve Pain?
Many everyday factors can cause back pain. Your job, sports and other physical activities, and even the mattress you sleep on can all be accountable for muscle or ligament strain and muscle spasms. However, conditions such as a pinched nerve, a herniated disk, bulging disks, or a variety of symptoms related to damaged or degenerative discs can also cause severe back pain and sciatia.
Sciatic nerve pain is defined as pain affecting the back and hip with radiating symptoms down the leg. When a patient experiences sciatic pain, they often present with complaints of back pain and shooting pain, or weakness running down their leg typically affecting only one side of your body. Sciatica most commonly occurs when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) compresses part of the nerve. The compressed nerve causes inflammation, pain and often some numbness in the affected leg. Although the pain associated with sciatica can be severe, most cases resolve with non-operative treatments in a few weeks.
Most people who suffer from sciatica are between the ages of 30 and 50. Women are more likely to develop the problem during pregnancy due to pressure on the sciatic nerve from the developing uterus. However, with comprehensive sciatic nerve pain treatment, you will find relief from your symptoms and get your on the path to recovery.
What are Sciatic Nerve Pain Symptoms?
The most common symptom from sciatica is pain. Pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating pain. However, usually only one side of your body is affect.
Some of the other symptoms of sciatica include, but are not limited to:
Pain that radiates from your lower (lumbar) spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg
Discomfort along the nerve pathway, but is likely to follow a path from your lower back to the buttock

Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg or foot
A constant pain on one side of the rear
Numbness, tingling or muscle weakness
Our Sciatic Nerve Pain Treatment
Effective treatment for sciatica begins with the decision to do something about it. If left untreated, sciatica will become chronic, making the recovery process more difficult.
At your first sciatic nerve pain treatment session at Focus Physiotherapy we take your history of back pain, as well as factors and lifestyle issues that contribute to your pain. You may be asked to squat, walk on your heels or toes, or raise your leg without bending the knee. These muscle tests help your physiotherapist determine if the sciatic nerve is irritated.
At Focus Physiotherapy, there are many common elements patients with sciatica receive as treatment.
- Pain Relieving Modalities: We use specialized physiotherapy equipment to assist in reducing the pain and inflammation associated with sciatica
- Education: Our team will teach you what to avoid and how to move to decrease the irritation to your lower back
- Manual Therapy: Mobility in certain areas may be restricted or excessive. Our health practitioners can identify the abnormal movements, ascertain the causes, and identify interventions that can return your mobility to normal
- Exercises: We create a personalized exercise regimen for your physicality and level of injury. Home programs, proper monitoring and progression of your activities will result in improved outcomes
- Spinal Decompression: Spinal Decompression treatment assists in reducing the compression over the spinal nerve roots if impinged
